Meet Svetlana Tsitron

Svetlana has been creating art since early childhood. Growing up without toys, she and her friends would look for ideas to invent their own — making dolls, jewelry, and other beautiful things from whatever they could find. They learned from elders, experimented together, and discovered the joy of turning everyday materials into something magical.

Her love for creativity and children was inspired by her mother, a kindergarten teacher. Following in her footsteps, Svetlana first completed a two-year trade-school program in early childhood education in Belarus. After moving to the United States, she worked as a kindergarten teacher and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and Art at Brooklyn College, followed by a degree in Art from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City.

Over the years, Svetlana taught in both kindergarten and elementary school settings. But her true passion was always combining art and teaching. In 2008, she opened Creative We Are in Brooklyn, where she led hundreds of children in joyful, hands-on projects for more than 17 years before relocating the studio to Belvidere, NJ.

For Svetlana, art is more than making something pretty — it’s about helping children grow. Her classes nurture imagination, fine motor skills, creativity, problem-solving, and confidence that children carry with them for life.

And just as importantly, she is passionate about keeping alive the old, slowly disappearing tradition of creating things with our own hands — a skill and joy that is more important than ever in today’s computer- and phone-dominated times.
